Marble Sculpture

Octopus

“Octopus” 2025

Colorado Yule Marble: 16″ x 10″ x 9″

She has a back story. I had become totally lost while carving the hair on a previous sculpture. Unable to coax flowing locks from the jagged rock, I flopped on the couch (boots and all) for a dusty nap. And there she was. She arrived fully formed in a dream. Completely bald, and with a friend.

Available: $7,500

Gurdjieff

“Gurdjieff” 2024

Italian Bardiglio Marble: 14″ x 10″ x 8″

George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1872? – 1949) was a Russian philosopher and rascal of distinction. He was an early interpreter of Eastern mindfulness practices for Western culture.  Like so many self styled spiritual leaders, he brewed bits of genuine wisdom with a whiff of con artistry. Despite my general unease with magical thinking, some of his ideas are quite brilliant and creative.

I was born into a spiritual group (it was the 70’s) based on his writings. This group had many practices, but foremost among them was art. This is where my young parents began their career in sculpture that has lasted to this day. In a very real way, my own sculpture career owes a debt of gratitude to this strange character. I sculpted Gurdjieff as both an homage and an exorcism!

Available: $6,500

Satyress

“Satyress” 2024

Italian Carrara Marble: 18″ x 11″ x 10″

My first bust. This is the piece that first taught me to work with marble. I had to carve this image a couple times before stone sculpture began to make any sense at all. Those horns are not decorative. The muse can be quite fierce and passionate. Learning to carve Italian marble is not for the faint of heart.
